Armed with a passion for service, a commitment to environment, a beaming smile, and clever camera, Jamie represented Wisconsin youth at the UNFCCC COP15 international climate negotiations last December, calling for a just and binding global climate treaty and documenting the expedition experience for viewers back home. Jamie recently opened her doors to a team of young bike riders traveling across the US on their way to the COP16 negotiation in Cancun, and shared her reflections with us below.

"What are your thoughts on Copenhagen?" A simple question posed to me over a post-dinner clean-up by Katherine, a noble young woman biking across the country with a small group of her friends, a few laptops and a video camera in search of solutions, out of desire of wanting to be a part of the solution. She and I share a passion and desire to be a part of one of many solutions to the climate realities we face, but, in all honesty, I am still not sure of my thoughts on Copenhagen. The feelings that rocket through my heart are still raw... they still sting with uncertainty. Yet, after pulling the memories forward to share, I find they are still rife with passion.

I flew home from Denmark at the end of 2009 ... speechless. I melded into the holidays at home; I found myself almost avoiding the conversation of my recent life-changing experience. I had no tangible solution to speak of, and this left the words caught in my throat.

Over the course of the first few months of 2010, I found my voice. I spent my time speaking to high school students, community organizations across Southeastern Wisconsin and my family. In reliving this global experience, I found that in each of our communities, on each of our streets, in each of our homes and hearts lies the solution. This is a humanitarian issue that must be addressed as such. Science supports it and can guide us in developing solutions to curb impending realities, but, ultimately, it is the responsibility of each of us to care for ourselves, our families and our communities, acknowledging that our climate is changing ways that threaten every aspect of our lives.

So what did I do to take my share of the responsibility? I organized the Wisconsin Clean Energy Forum to bring solution-based conversation to Wisconsin. I talk, every day, to someone new about one part of this issue. I work with young people, with teens, to develop civic-minded leaders that believe in themselves and believe in their ability to be a part of the solution NOW.

I am working every day to do my part to put this issue in my daughter Madeline's history books. I wake up every morning knowing that I have a responsibility to build a strong, noble legacy for my family and for the generations after me that walk Lake Michigan's shoreline and Wisconsin's parks and streets.

These riders are doing a great thing - inspiring conversation by sharing the stories of solution-minded, creative projects that are fueled by the passion of individuals establishing their legacy in the history books of their community and the scrapbooks of their family. We need sustainable policies, economics and community development - but all that follows the power of people doing it anyways. The power of people who are moving ahead of our governments, businesses and local leadership to challenge us to push ourselves further than what understand to be "the way things are". We must continue to live it and demand it from our leaders.

Before leaving my home, Alec, another rider, told me that we do not yet know the impact of all the positive movements we have witnessed and been a part of over the past few years - 350.org, You Tube videos and blogs documenting the real stories around the world - so, we must keep putting it out there. We must keep pushing the positive into our communities and ourselves. So that is what I will continue to do.

-------

Several of the 2009 Expedition Copenhagen delegates will be attending the COP16 negotiations this year in Cancun. You can follow their stories and those of other US youth delegates at www.sustainUS.org

The Will Steger Foundation is proud to sponsor Alec, Katherine and rest of the Solutions Revolution cross-country bike riders in their accreditation for COP16. (Pardon the easy pun, but punny is what I do.)

In 1969, Wisconsin politician Gaylord Nelson and thousands of demonstrators on college campuses brought a public and political platform for environmental issues and the movement propelling solutions. In 1970, Earth Day became official and is now celebrated by millions in every country around the world.

So at the top of Earth Day's hill, what do we see?
I see a world of volunteers, a continued commitment to action from young people across college campuses and around the world, and a continued struggle for peoples around the world to have access to a natural, healthy environment.

As a country, we have come a long way.

In the early 70's, we created the Environmental Protection Agency, enacted groundbreaking laws (Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act, Endangered Species Act) and, as a country, took action to create solutions to immediately curb our environmentally destructive behaviors.

In the 80's, millions of acres were designated protected wilderness and the movement built momentum.

In the 90's, the movement to reduce, reuse and recycle came to the forefront. The environmental outlook also took on a more global perspective, looking at the preservation of not only U.S. land, but also rainforests and other wild places that were (are) threatened by human economic "growth".

So where are we today? We are not dumping ALL of our trash into our waterways, have developed protocols to dispose of toxic materials and have preserved lands to maintain the wild of this world. But there is still a great struggle to sustain those accomplishments and move forward.

Today, we are faced with an unbelievable global situation and a hard question to answer: what do we do when the entire planet, including every community of the United States, is endangered through our actions, through our imbalance with the world's natural ecosystems?

Our unstable, unsustainable energy structure is threatening the health of our planet, including ... us. Humans are at great risk and not just in the most vulnerable communities of the far north, coasts and small island states.

Here in the Midwest, we are heavily dependent on coal for our energy sources -- Wisconsin alone gets 70% of its energy from coal. The founding state of Earth Day has the ability to create FIVE TIMES the amount of energy needed to power its own state needs from renewable energy sources alone! So why do we continue to ship $21 million tax dollars out of the state every year for non-renewable sources that harm our communities' people and environment? We lack the political will & clout to move us forward.

So this Earth Day, pick up trash, plant a garden and ride your bike... but you also need to call your Senators, send a thank you to your representative, write your local reps and figure out how we can stand true to our environmental legacy here in Wisconsin, around the U.S., and around the world.

Earth Day has reached the top of her hill, but she's not ready to go down yet... and neither am I.

Plans for Saturday?

Are you are free or looking for a break from holiday festivities/prep work on Saturday, April 3 from 11am-1pm?

Then bring family & friends to the American Legion (900 Monroe Ave.) in South Milwaukee for the Wisconsin Clean Energy Forum: Jobs & the Clean Energy Jobs Race!

This will be a great opportunity for you to:
*Learn more about WI energy system, where our energy comes from and the ecological footprint of our system
*Clean energy solutions for WI to improve our health, security and financial state LOCALLY ($21 million tax dollars leave WI EVERY YEAR to pay for non-renewable energy resources)
*Ask questions of our business, community and political leaders

Can't make it out? As of the unenforced deadline of January 31,88 countries put down their reduction goals (which will also be unenforced) for 2020.

Who came out on top for emission reductions? It's complicated, but here are a few key points that I picked up from the rolling results:

AWESOME POINTS:
1. 88 countries put down emission reduction targets -- this means a good majority of the world is hooked on addressing the issue of climate change. LOTS of players on the climate solutions field.

2. The U.S. put down a solid percentage target. And we're IN the game!

3. The world's largest emitters (EU, China, Brazil, and the US) are all game on the accord. Play nice world leaders.

LAME POINTS:
1. This accord is not binding, such that there is no enforcement agent on these targets other than government's good will. This is like the WNBA playing with no ref on the court. How can it be fair?

2. Everyone's reduction targets are based on different years, so the percentages are not fairly comparable. In other words, folks are looking at higher levels of emissions in later years (i.e. 2005 vs. 1990) as their baseline amount so that the bigger reduction numbers look better but actually do less. We're all playing by different rules.

3. The U.S. is taking their reduction target date from 2005 and still only putting 17% on the table. C'mon Obama -- we can do it better. GET YOUR GAME FACE ON AMERICA & BRING IT!

Right now, the U.S. has the highest percentage of installed wind power -- go US! Yet this is a short-lived victory and does not do much for our economy. The New York Times ran a front page spread on China emerging as the global leader in clean energy production. They have put stronger reduction targets on the table (40-45% by 2020) and have already surpassed previous global clean energy leaders, including Denmark.

Obama's talking clean coal and nuclear to push our country to the forefront of the renewable economy -- that will take us nowhere sustainable. He has just TRIPLED the funding for nuclear power (which has no disposal plan for nuclear reactors -- scary!) and increased funding for clean coal technologies that have not been developed yet. He also talks big game about how his administration is putting record amounts of funding toward renewable energy; however, when administrations past have put next to no funding to this line of the budget (or lacked a line for renewables all together), nearly anything is a record amount.

WE can do better America. WE need to do better. We are the second highest emitting country in the world and the responsibility we have taken and are taking for the ecological and economic issues pale in comparison.

This is an issue that must have change DEMANDED from our government. Call, write, meet with your representatives -- find out who that is here. This issue will only get more expensive to address with less options to address it with in the future.

Two months ago today, I embarked on an epic global journey to the heart of the climate problems, solutions, politics and policy. The stories from that two week adventure are still engaging, and I'm still telling them; however, the story is not yet historical. We are making history -- it is up to us what will be written.

There and back again

Many voices sounded in the streets across Copenhagen this past December, and they came together late in the evening on the 18th of December as COP15 came to a close.

On that night, I sat in a small Danish apartment with a few of my fellow delegates and listened to President Obama give his final words on the accord. For the first time in near two and a half weeks, the world seemed quiet. Shock, exhaustion, disappointment, confusion... his seemingly empty words hung in the air. All I could hear was the breathing of my comrades and his political statement. Not a statement of conviction, of passion, of progression, of change... a statement of politics.

I felt deceived, brokenhearted, emotional and worn out. What had we worked so hard for? What does this mean for us? For humanity? What does this mean? I felt blindsided by the auditory wrecking ball delivered by my President that thrust a gaping hole into my relentless hope for the impossible.

The world was quiet and still.

I took some time to talk with my friends and put this new reality to the back of my head. Just for a few hours, then I returned to the quiet. The quiet that had settled over Copenhagen and over the youth movement. For the first time in two weeks, I did not have 350 emails to check by the end of the day. The world slowed back down. My psyche reverted to the corner of my mind with the over-sized sofa and low-light lamp where I go to reflect when I don't know what to think. This is where I stayed for the next few days and my long travels home.

A few weeks later and back at home, a renewed passion has reignited in my heart. I have returned home to the thought and aspiration that initially inspired me to apply for Expedition Copenhagen: local, sustainable communities.

I met hundreds of young people and thousands of people of all ages from all over the world; each of their home communities has different ways to meet the same goal as communities all over the world: local and sustainable. We need to take care of each other here, at home. We can address this global issue of climate change through local solutions. The Midwest specifically has phenomenal opportunity to become a leader domestically and internationally through clean energy development.

2010 must be a year of action. We must continue to hold our leaders at the top to the promises they campaign on, but we cannot go to the top alone. Our action, as we know, needs to happen at all levels of government and in the home of our community members.

Three Words.

What can be said in three words? President Barack Obama built a campaign around three words: Yes, we can.

A majority of America believed in those words and many still do. The deal, err accord, that was created in Denmark as a result of COP15 was much less than what we called for: a FAIR, BINDING, JUST treaty. We have not lost hope, only multiplied our strength in numbers and our ambition to reach our goal by COP16 in Mexico City.

In addition, the crew of us in Copenhagen compiled a short video (put together by the talented -- and fun -- Jerry Stenger) to capture our experience, on the ground, as youth, at COP15 in Copenhagen in 2009. These actions were put together in less than 24 hours and is not an action that was agreed upon across the entire youth movement. Many, including myself, disagree with pushing the barriers and halting progress (however slow) inside the center.

Actions, such as the sit-in last night, are more peaceful and effective for our movement of ACTION NOW, SOLUTIONS NOW. Our governments will not respond positively to violence. Although the protesters featured in the video below WERE peaceful, they also announced, in a variety of forums throughout the time leading up to the march, that they planned to break down the barriers. This is negatively provocative and puts up more barriers in the process by beating down the physical one.

We are smart, insightful, passionate and empowered. We have the ability to affect change without stirring violence.

Walk-outs and sit-ins urge change.

Demonstrators walk out to join people's forum outside the Bella Center.

As thousands marched towards the Bella Center this morning, hundreds inside marched out.

These actions were sparked by a combination of two things:
1. limited access to NGO's (non-governmental organizations) and
2. stagnant negotiations between Annex I (developed) countries and G77 (developing) countries.

The world's media are representing these actions with a variety of headlines. They locked activists into the building for two hours, and searched some of the nearby properties. Campaigners say they took away various items including a power drill, an angle grinder, and some wooden props. No arrests were made.

A spokeswoman for Climate Justice Action (CJA), one of the activist groups, said: "People were enormously frightened and alarmed. We really don't know why the police handled it like this: the Danish government has provided this accommodation for activists and now the police are acting unnecessarily. We'll be asking for the items they confiscated back."

Police have confirmed the raid took place but have not yet issued a statement.

The centre on Ragnhild Street is one of a handful of sleeping spaces provided by the government for the protesters who are expected during the course of the summit. Activists estimate that between 30,000-40,000 protesters may arrive over the next couple of weeks. Hundreds of small-scale actions are planned, and three large-scale peaceful protests are also due to take place on Saturday, Sunday, and Wednesday.

Police have said that although they will facilitate peaceful protest, they fear that an international extremist network may come to Copenhagen to join the peaceful protests then break away to commit acts of violence.
The head of the Police Intelligence Service (PET), Jakob Scharf, has said that "violent extremists will try to abuse and get a free ride on the peaceful activist involvement in the climate debate."
Scharf said he feared that peaceful protesters may end up in a battle zone between extremists and police.
Some activists have privately conceded that there may well be trouble at some of the upcoming demonstrations. But most strongly refute the idea that troublemakers are descending on Copenhagen. "We've found that to be a myth put about by people who are seeking to undermine the genuine reasons people are protesting," said Mel Evans of CJA. "We've issued a call out for people to take peaceful action on climate change and that's why they're coming here."

US Youth Crash Climate Denier Live Webcast in Copenhagen

Young Clean Energy Advocates called "Hitler Youth" by Climate Denier Lord Monckton

COPENHAGEN, DENMARK - Fifty young Americans took over a climate denier conference hosted by a prominent conservative organization this evening in Copenhagen, rushing the stage and telling the live TV audience that a clean energy future is the real road to prosperity in America. The young people, merely a fraction of the more than 350 US youth in Denmark for the UN climate negotiations, entered a session of the Americans for Prosperity "Hot Air Tour" speakers series and were able to drop two banners and gain access to the conference's stage. The live event was webcast to over forty climate denier rallies in cities across the United States. See a video at http://bit.ly/4FAljl and pictures at http://is.gd/5hbUR.

The students entered the event in small groups, joining a paltry audience of five conference attendees, who had come to hear climate denier Lord Christopher Monckton speak about the Copenhagen climate negotiations. After the first five minutes of the event, student representatives from SustainUS, the Sierra Student Coalition, the Cascade Climate Network, and other American youth NGOs displayed banners reading "Climate Disaster Ahead" and "Clean Energy Now." After security agents at the event took the banners, the young attendees began a chant of "Real Americans for Prosperity are Americans for Clean Energy." The chant lasted five minutes, as the youth took the stage and displayed their message for the live video feed being sponsored by Americans for Prosperity, despite evasive action by Americans for Prosperity President Tim Phillips and his camera crew. As they left the stage, Lord Monckton repeatedly called the activists "crazed Hitler Youth" and "nazis."

"Clean energy creates jobs," says Rachel Barge, a 24-year-old entrepreneur from San Francisco, CA who was the first young person to raise her voice at the event, "These climate action delayers and science deniers are stealing bold, new economic opportunities from the American public." Laura Comer, 21, of Strongsville, OH, seconded Barge, saying, "We're representing the majority of Americans on this, particularly young Americans. The real America wants clean energy - not more fossil fuel-funded lies about the science."

"We are Americans for prosperity too," says Ethan Buckner of the Sierra Student Coalition, "Prosperity that's created through a new clean energy economy that will revitalize the American economy and provide millions of clean energy jobs for our generation and all generations to come." "We need a strong climate and clean energy bill from Congress and a science-based and just treaty in Copenhagen in order to jump start this new energy economy Americans are calling for so loudly," adds Ben Wessel of SustainUS, "The youth of America are ready to move forward into a sustainable future, and we need our elected officials to join us. We refuse to sit quietly today while our leaders decide the future of tomorrow."

Climate Justice Fast Prayer

The Climate Justice Fast crew has a message that shows their message down to their bare bones. The ability to go for over a month (today is DAY 33 for the three lead fasters) on only water and maintain sound mind and energy truly spotlights the power of one's determination and dedication. Below is an interfaith, non-denominational prayer written by the fasters to help participants here in Copenhagen maintain a solid grounding while working towards a global decision and solution.

INTERFAITH CLIMATE PRAYER

We offer this prayer to the spirit that binds us all together as humanity, whatever name this spirit may take in our individual faiths or spiritual system or beliefs.

We offer this prayer to our mother earth, and also to the shared spirit and the very core ethic of this great movement for positive change.

We know and deeply understand that our planet, our mother, is in a state of crisis and emergency. Her boundaries and rules have been pushed far beyond reason, she has not been respected, and for this we offer the deepest penance and apology. We offer our promise that we will work as hard as we can to rectify these past wrongs and to bring justice – climate justice – into being.

Therefore, we pray that all world citizens:

may strive to educate themselves and that they are able to be educated.

We pray that they find the wisdom to welcome new knowledge and ideas with opennessm redefine their values, challenge their lifestyles, and continually reassess their goals in life.

We pray that they will broaden their perspectives, gain global consciousness and act in solidarity with brothers and sisters from all background. Feel connected with each other, with nature itself and our planet.

We pray that they will look for the truth and join the growing global movement for change, that will bring us all into a sustainable future.

We pray that world leaders:

will find the strength to fulfill their responsibility to lead, to reflect what science tells us is necessary, and at all times act with the long-term interests of their populations and future generations in mind.

We pray that they may find the strength to be courageous, stepping outside of what may be ”politically pragmatic” or ”politically possible”, to instead take action and show real leadership that is bold and necessary.

Finally, we pray that in order to bring these changes into being, all of us, the people in this room and all of the people who are part of this beautiful movement all around the world,

may find the courage to always speak the truth and to do so loudly,

that we may act without fear,

and that we may have the confidence of knowing that our vital work is the truth, and that it is in the best interests of all people and all peoples, all nations, in the best interest of all species of mother earth, and of nature itself, and in the best interests of all future generations.

Amen. One of those comforts is Stonyfield Farm yogurt. This stellar company has not only sponsored our time here with Will Steger Foundation, they also tickle my taste buds amidst my granola in the morning.

This photo to your right is Danish yogurt. Mmmhmm. Mixing it with my granola in the morning reminds me of stirring only half melted butter into my cookie dough. Smushing it into a stirred submission, the delegates and I jokingly ask each other for a fork and knife to eat our yogurt.

Check out this video for a first hand look.

I feel like it's good training though. We're ready for a fight, starting with the yogurt in the morning. I'm not sure if negotiating a climate bill will be easier or more challenging that stirring our granola into this yogurt... time will tell. Stay tuned for more metaphorical updates.

arrival with a side of anticipation

I am officially IN Copenhagen. I met young people from Australia that have been on a climate fast for 28 days -- they will continue to fast throughout the negotiations. Big names like Al Gore, Desmond TuTu, President Obama, Bill McKibben and hundreds more explorers, politicians, leaders and activists will grace the halls of the Bella Center here in Copenhagen to wage revolution.

Keep following this blog and the other Expedition Copenhagen pipelines of information coming at you strong starting tomorrow morning and continuing in a storm of up-to-the-minute details of the scene over here.

The time to hesitate is through.

stay tuned.

rEvolution will come.

Story of Cap & Trade

From the simple, inspiring and creative minds that brought us the Story of Stuff, comes the timely story of Cap and Trade. Complicated? You bet, but these great innovators have broken down this complicated, political topic into a fun, interactive knowledge trip. Host Annie Leonard introduces the energy traders and Wall Street financiers at the heart of this scheme and reveals the "devils in the details" in current cap and trade proposals: free permits to big polluters, fake offsets and distraction from what’s really required to tackle the climate crisis. If you’ve heard about Cap & Trade, but aren’t sure how it works (or who benefits), this is the film is for you.

Change of a Hopeful Heart

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! On the eve of great taste bud indulgence & grateful reflections, I am yet again filled with hopeful spirit. President Barack Obama IS COMING TO COPENHAGEN!

Now he's only going to be there for a day or two, but his staff will be there presenting a variety of sessions that will announce/discuss how the United States plans to address climate issues. This will be the first time that the United States has a serious presence at these negotiations.

Obama has ALSO stated that he is confident that a treaty CAN be created in Copenhagen this December. This news coupled with recent promises of higher reduction targets in Europe if a treaty is signed make for green lights where red once shone.

Below is the official announcement from the White House... get excited folks! This is the making of global revolution:

THE WHITE HOUSE
Office of the Press Secretary

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 25, 2009

President to Attend Copenhagen Climate Talks
Administration Announces U.S. Emission Target for Copenhagen

The White House announced today that President Obama will travel to Copenhagen on Dec. 9 to participate in the United Nations Climate Change Conference, where he is eager to work with the international community to drive progress toward a comprehensive and operational Copenhagen accord. The President has worked steadily on behalf of a positive outcome in Copenhagen throughout the year. Based on the President's work on climate change over the past 10 months - in the Major Economies Forum, the G20, bilateral discussions and multilateral consultations - and based on progress made in recent, constructive discussions with China and India's Leaders, the President believes it is possible to reach a meaningful agreement in Copenhagen. The President's decision to go is a sign of his continuing commitment and leadership to find a global solution to the global threat of climate change, and to lay the foundation for a new, sustainable and prosperous clean energy future.

The White House also announced that, in the context of an overall deal in Copenhagen that includes robust mitigation contributions from China and the other emerging economies, the President is prepared to put on the table a U.S. emissions reduction target in the range of 17% below 2005 levels in 2020 and ultimately in line with final U.S. energy and climate legislation. In light of the President's goal to reduce emissions 83% by 2050, the expected pathway set forth in this pending legislation would entail a 30% reduction below 2005 levels in 2025 and a 42% reduction below 2005 in 2030. This provisional target is in line with current legislation in both chambers of Congress and demonstrates a significant contribution to a problem that the U.S. has neglected for too long. With less than two weeks to go until the beginning of the Copenhagen conference, it is essential that the countries of the world, led by the major economies, do what it takes to produce a strong, operational agreement that will both launch us on a concerted effort to combat climate change and serve as a stepping stone to a legally binding treaty. The President is working closely with Congress to pass energy and climate legislation as soon as possible.

Underscoring President Obama's commitment to American leadership on clean energy and combating climate change, the White House also announced today that a host of Cabinet secretaries and other top officials from across the Administration will travel to Copenhagen for the conference. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, Commerce Secretary Gary Locke, Energy Secretary Steven Chu, and Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa P. Jackson are all scheduled to attend, along with Council on Environmental Quality Chair Nancy Sutley, and Assistant to the President for Energy and Climate Change Carol Browner.

For the first time, the U.S. delegation will have a U.S. Center at the conference, providing a unique and interactive forum to share our story with the world. In addition to working with other countries to advance American interests, U.S. delegates will keynote a series of events highlighting actions by the Obama Administration to provide domestic and global leadership in the transition to a clean energy economy. Topics will range from energy efficiency investments and global commitments to renewables policy and clean energy jobs. The following keynote events and speakers are currently scheduled:

* Wednesday, December 9th: Taking Action at Home, EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson

* Thursday, December 10th: New Energy Future: the role of public lands in clean energy production and carbon capture, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar

* Friday, December 11th: Clean Energy Jobs in a Global Marketplace, Commerce Secretary Gary Locke

* Monday, December 14th: Leading in Energy Efficiency and Renewables, Energy Secretary Steven Chu

* Tuesday, December 15th: Clean Energy Investments: creating opportunities for rural economies, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack

* Thursday, December 17th: Backing Up International Agreement with Domestic Action, CEQ Chair Nancy Sutley and Assistant to the President Carol Browner

These events will underline the historic progress the Obama Administration has made to address climate change and create a new energy future.

Indian Prime Minister Strikes a Strong Chord

Despite recent statements of doubt by President Barack Obama regarding the passing of a binding treaty in Copenhagen, Indian Prime Minister will push for a stronger stance when meeting with the President on Tuesday, November 24. Check out the article from the Indian Express:

Climate meet: India wants 'legally binding substantive' outcome

Agencies Posted online: Monday , Nov 23, 2009 at 1122 hrs

Washington : India does not endorse efforts to dilute expectations from the Copenhagen climate summit and is pushing for a "legally binding substantive" outcome, a matter that will be discussed during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh talks with US President Barack Obama.
Coinciding with the Copenhagen meet, India is considering a legislation incorporating all its action plans and national missions aimed at reducing dependence on coal based fuels and "improving" the environment by 20 per cent by 2020.

During their meeting tomorrow, Singh and Obama will discuss what kind of outcome is expected from Copenhagen meet beginning on December 7, sources said. India and a number of developing countries want "legally binding substantive outcome" from the meet and do not endorse the recent statement by the US and other APEC nations that a mere political declaration would do.

The sources said that India does not want the world to give up with regard to Copenhagen meet, as is being done by some countries.

India feels that there is still time for Copenhagen conference, particularly its high-level segment beginning on December 16, and efforts should be made to push the negotiations for an outcome mandated by United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and Bali action plan.

There should be no attempt to pre-empt the Copenhagen meet as 192 countries are involved in it and the consensus would be required even if it is not possible to achieve a legally binding declaration at Copenhagen, some consensus should be arrived at the end, the sources said.

The effort should be to see "how far we can go", they said.

"We should try to get the maximum from Copenhagen and the template should continue to be UNFCCC and Bali action Plan," a source said.

On its part, India does not wish to see any outcome that will diminish the prospect of its development. If the Copenhagen meet fails to arrive at legally binding outcome it should pave the way for such results in the next six months or so. UNFCCC provides for countries furnishing their domestic commitments about what they have done in the past and what they intend to do in the future.

India is willing to adhere to this even if the national commitments have to be submitted periodically.
The sources pointed out India already has a domestic action plan which is voluntary and aimed at specific target. These include solar mission and green India vision which are aimed at "improving" environment by 20 per cent by 2020.

The government plans to encapsulate the various climate action plan in the form of a legislation, the sources said. They said India and the US bilaterally have conversion of views on climate issue even though they may differ at multilateral negotiations.

Both countries agree that there is an inter-link between climate change and energy security and the necessity of use of technology to fight this problem. The sources emphasised that there was critical consensus in India over how to approach Copenhagen meet notwithstanding a recent statement by Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh which created confusion before he issued a clarification.

Light up your lighter!

No, we're not in the midst of a full force power jam, reaching for imagined stars and pulling them down tight to our chest as Journey sends you back down memory lane to your first high school flame. This is better.

Now I know that claiming to be better than Journey, especially in Wisconsin, will leave doubt and tight-fisted Journey lovers at my doorstep... but hear me out. Better yet... hear Bill McKibben, founder of 350.org, out.

"Dear 350.org supporters,

It's been just three weeks since since you organized what CNN is calling the biggest day of political action in the planet's history. Except your actions didn't just make history, they helped change the course of the planet's future.

Please view this special thank you video from a delegate from Palau (a small, low-lying island nation) at the recent Barcelona climate conference. It's a powerful testament to how you've made 350 a reality in the negotiations for a global climate deal - and just in time as the world turns its attention to the pivotal UN Climatetalks in Copenhagen just over two weeks away.

Now, some of you you may have heard some of the frustrating news this week. Here it is if you haven't:

Earlier this week Barack Obama and the leaders of some other large nations announced that they weren't going to reach any kind of legally binding climate agreement in Copenhagen--declaring that they need more time despite the five years of preparation they've already had.

We cannot accept such inaction without taking a stand. With the survival of entire countries is at stake, delay isn't an option. A country like the Maldives, the lowest country on the planet at about 1.5 meters above sea level, may not exist in a hundred years if we don't act now. For millions of people who are the world's most climate vulnerable, getting back to 350 as soon as we can means making it out alive.

So it's time for the next big steps. The world needs your help once more.

Our main hope is you will organize a vigil candlelight vigil at some iconic or strategic place place near you on Friday or Saturday night, December 11th or 12th. Around the world people will gather to lighting lanterns or candles, in solemn solidarity with the citizens of those nations who will be first to face the challenge to their very survival posed by climate change.

Click here to register a Vigil For Survival in your community: www.350.org/vigil
[Note from Jamie: Make them as creative & fun as your 350 events!]

Eventually all of us will be hard-pressed by rising seas, spreading drought, and temperatures too hot for growing food. But right now-this year, this decade-there are countries being pressed to the brink. They're at the forefront of a fight for real change in Copenhagen, and need your help to amplify their voice.

Some of these "Vigils for Survival" will take place at iconic places in communities all over the world. Others will be outside American consulates and embassies, and a senator's offices throughout the United States. Partly this is because the United States is, historically, the country most responsible for the carbon in our atmosphere. But more it's because America, if it chose, could lead the way to a sane global climate policy.

In a very real sense, the short-term survival of many nations, and the long-term health of the whole planet, rests in the hands of Obama and the United States Senate. Their positions, along with the level of leadership provided by the European Union, China and a few other nations, can make or break a global climate treaty. The decisions made by this small group of people will in large part determine whether or not the world forges a deal strong enough to pull us back from the brink of climate catastrophe. Their courage--or lack of it--will help set the future of the planet for geologic time.

You have proven that you know how to organize your friends, your neighbors, your community. You are a leader of a movement to transform our world. As we call on our leaders to show bold leadership, we have a great opportunity to show them how, by example.

We'll soon be e-mailing the entire 350 email list to sign-up for vigils around the world. Will you sign up to organize a vigil so we can connect them with you right away?

Onwards, with hope.

Bill McKibben for the whole 350.org Team

P.S. - The 350 team is busy preparing to go to Copenhagen, to represent and back up the 350 movement in full force. If you have a 350 banner you might be willing to spare (or create!), we would love to display them loud and proud in marches and at the conference center! We can't promise to get your banners back to you - but we do promise to help make sure they get the message across to world leaders.

Please pack and mail your banners to:

350.org
2150 Allston Way
Suite 340, David Brower Center
Berkeley, CA 94704
USA

-- Thank you!"

R to the EVOLUTION

Revolution never come with a warning.
Revolution never send you an omen.
Revolution just arrives like the morning,
ring the alarm time to wake up this morning.
~Michael Franti & Spearhead

With just a few short weeks & a few long days before landing at the climate movement's ground zero, I feel like a Scooby Doo character who is running in place before setting off in an all out sprint!

The other week Al Gore made a great appearance on David Letterman to promote his new book Our Choice: A Plan to Solve the Climate Crisis and to talk Copenhagen. Gore stated that although the grassroots movement is the largest this world has ever seen, it has yet to reach a critical mass. It is up to us to prove that statement wrong.

All the amazing folks I've had the opportunity to talk to here in Wisconsin on the platform of climate solutions are ready for revolution -- we want climate justice, climate equality and REAL, BINDING, SUSTAINABLE climate solutions. That is the message that I will carry to and advocate for in Copenhagen.

To the folks I have talked to and to all those readers that I have not yet had the opportunity to meet -- revolution is ours to make. It is every voice, every song, every noise that we create that will break the barrier to create a critical mass. The volume is rising... I hear it... I feel the vibrations... it moves my soul and moves me to act... we need it to be LOUDER.

It's like the end of Horton Hears A Who... there is a jungle of doubt willing to fight to prevent change, to spout all the reasons that a world with 350ppm, a world run on sustainable energy, a world led with a positive, green foot forward and the creation of a dramatic, binding, just climate treaty is not logical or possible. Amidst the clamor of doubt, we must stand strong with loud voices, clanging every pot and drum and using our voices to let them know that WE ARE HERE! WE ARE HERE! WE ARE HERE! We can break the sound barrier and create a critical mass that is impossible to ignore.

We are the movement. We are the ones that create the revolution. And just like Horton, we will stand strong amidst powerful, threatening opposition. And just like every Who in Whoville, we will yell and make every noise possible to let global leaders and communities know that WE ARE HERE.

We will reach a critical mass.
We will reach a tipping point, where our position will be held as the only viable solution.
We must continue to put pressure on our officials through visual actions in our communities and through letters & phone calls.
Every person, every voice is necessary.

Youth are Shining, Sea to Shining Sea

The shine on the seas I speak of is the reflection of the light from the youth leading the path to a sustainable planet!

All corny speech aside, this kid rocks my face. There are over 4000 events in over 170 countries -- that is nearly every country in the world! (SIDE FACT: There are 195 countries total, depending on your political source.)

Here in Racine, WI we will be hosting a 350 rally DOWNTOWN in Monument Square from 2-3pm... complete with live music and dancing penguins! Atop the climate change solutions soap box will be Representative Corey Mason, Will Steger Foundation Youth Delegate to Copenhagen (yours truly) and representatives from each of Racine's high schools to tell how they are making headway to sustainable solutions right here in Racine.

This event was put together through the collaboration of high school students from Prairie, Case, Horlick and Walden III. Now my amenities are not iOfficial; however, they still suck up energy when I'm not looking.

Did you know that many of the plasma TVs on the market suck up more power than many refrigerators? Crazy, hey?!

So how do we become more efficient with our new wave of iLife or similar household electronics that are yet to have federal regulated energy rules?

THE ANSWER: as in most politically charged market queries, there is never one answer. There is one easy solution, aside from removing yourself from society into an e-free cave: USE LESS and PULL THE PLUG (when you're not using).

Most importantly, BE AWARE of the source of your energy and your energy costs. As fall & winter approaches the Midwest, energy costs become hot tamale topics (hello heating bill!). Get to know the wattage lingo and calculate much your appliances use.

Most important, listen to your mother. She knows best.

GOOD says it best

Over my fresh cup of organic coffee, I opened my browser this morning to see a wonderfully worded blog on the climate talks in Copenhagen this December. (Click on the title of this blog for the link)

As the weeks close in on the first two weeks of the last month of our year, the momentum is only going to build!

Here in Wisconsin, there will be a stampede of youth in Milwaukee and Green Bay to lobby for climate action! Don't just watch the hill -- join in the action for Youth Climate Lobby Day on Friday, September 25. Right now the first ever climate bill sits on the desks of our US Senators. In order to have a strong negotiating platform at COP15 (aka international climate negotiations), the US needs to pass this bill.

So meet us in Green Bay @ DePere High School to meet with Senator Feingold or in Milwaukee @ Milwaukee Area Technical College to meet with Senator Kohl -- we will be meeting at noon. These two folks need to know that the youth of Wisconsin want the US to take serious actions to address climate change.

You can find the invite on Facebook Events (search Youth Climate Lobby Day) or you can e-mail me at jamie_racine7@hotmail.com for more information.

the expedition has begun

Greetings to friends near and far,

My name is Jamie Racine, and I have been chosen to represent Wisconsin/Midwest/US youth at COP 15, the international climate control negotiations, in Copenhagen, Denmark this December. (http://en.cop15.dk/frontpage)

These negotiations, hosted by the United Nations, will be of key importance as we figure out globally the actions we are going to take to slow climate change after the Kyoto Protocol expires in 2012. This meeting will be among the most important of our time. I will be one of ten students representing the Midwest and the Will Steger Foundation (www.willstegerfoundation.
org) in Copenhagen.

As one of two Wisconsin delegates, I will be working with Wisconsin schools throughout the fall to educate students about the negotiations and facilitate discussions on these issues and what should be done. I will also build support for climate change solutions as we work with networks of local college students throughout the fall.

So, what will I be able to do as a delegate in Copenhagen? I will have access to many negotiation meetings as well as outside events hosted by organizations from around the world. I will meet with youth delegations from many other countries and create a global youth platform describing our stances on the issues being negotiated. One of my most important jobs will be to get word out about what is happening and the importance of what is being decided.

I hope some of you will tune in to what will become more regular updates on this expedition. If there is any part of this journey (whether locally or during the two weeks in Copenhagen) that you would be particularly interested to hear about, please let me know! Likewise, if there is a publication or news source where you get stellar eco and climate news, please pass that on to me as well. All resources are needed to rock this out in a real way! Much more information to come soon.

Ever forward, Jamie
